EDD is an event focused on the challenges of development of the global world. This year, EDD 2018 deepened the issues of gender equality and women empowerment. Like every year the tons of Co2 that was produced was offset by supporting development projects managed by recognized and certified agencies.

In Mexico, household water heaters are predominantly fuelled directly with either natural gas or liquefied pe-troleum gas (LPG). The project consists of the free distribution and direct installation by certified lady plumb-ers of water saving devices in 325,000 low-income urban households in the Mexico City Valley and other re-gions of the country.
Project water saving devices will include low-flow showerheads and faucet regulators, technologies which are produced by Adelmar International, a local, woman-led technology provider which is highly recognized in Mexico for its innovative developments.
The water saving devices effectively reduce hot water dispensed from targeted water fixtures (shower, bathroom and kitchen sinks) without reducing the level of service or comfort to the users. There is a direct linkage between reducing domestic hot water use and re-ducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This project is a combined tree planting, development and carbon programme. Smallholder and subsistence farmers organize themselves into community groups to plant trees on their degraded land to improve their livelihoods and address local, regional and global environmental issues such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, adaptation and vulnerability to climate change. The project has recently been awarded Best Offsetting Project in the Environmental Finance global survey.

Nearly a billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. This Gold Standard project, based in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda and Uganda, provides clean drinking water to small rural communities by repairing and drilling new boreholes. Boreholes can be used as water wells by installing a vertical pipe casing and well screen, which allows water to be extracted from the ground. By providing clean water, communities no longer need to purify water through boiling. This alleviates pressure on local forests – the predominant source of firewood – and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The project also works with the communities to identify additional needs, including providing access to affordable cookstoves, solar energy and WASH training (specifically as part of school programmes).

This Gold Standard CDM project addresses the energy demand supply gap in the state of Tamil Nadu, while also helping to tackle climate change. The project involves the installation of 63 wind turbines rated at 800 KW capacity each. This will generate 109.625 GWh of clean, renewable electricity every year to be provided to the state electricity utility – helping to tackle to energy demand supply gap in the state of Tamil Nadu. By helping to ensure that Tamil Nadu’s energy demand is met with clean energy, this project is replacing electricity which would be produced primarily through the burning of fossil fuels therefore reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 103,612 tCO2e annually.

Improving Life for women and girls (Climate Care – Kenya)

In 2017, the EDD contributed to offset 3138 tonnes of CO2 through this project. This contribution helped reduce fuel consumption and cooking time by up to 50%, freeing up income which would have otherwise been spent on fuel.

Afforestation Taking Root (My Climate Neutral – Nicaragua)

EDD 2017 contributed to an offset of 1377 tonnes of CO2 through this project. This helps in Nicaraguan farmers to reforest under-utilised lands and enabling better land management.
